It is all a hoax

I am a metal detectorist in Uk, and having just found a complete Dodecahedron, found the article extremely comprehensive and a very plausible explanation

Far too complicated. KISS and Occam's razor says it would be far more simple

A light source
Could the dodecahdron be a light source, basically like a lighthouse, that takes light and bends it into multiple beams?

I haven’t seen any of the actual dodecahedra in real life, so I don’t really know the relative sizes, but could they be a different type of caltrop? I haven’t really put any thought into this hypothesis, it was just the first thought that popped into my mind when I saw them and read the description. The hollow center and holes could be used to administer a poison "payload". Have any tests been performed on any of the dodecahedra looking for chemical signatures?

No basis for this guess. To me it seems with the variable size of holes this tool could be used for either auditing the size of various coins (possibly being filed/shaved down to steal metal) or for punching a round blank coin out from a sheet of metal before using a dye to stamp the coin impression on it.

Thank you for the wonderfully interesting and stimulating article. It is fun to speculate about the purpose of such things. Although I have no technical knowledge of antiquities or ancient history, I cannot help but to throw out my sense of its use. Being made of brass and artfully and intricately designed, his item appears to possibly have been of great value to the leadership of the northern armies. Given that the Julian calendar with its twelve months -- possibly corresponding to the 12 sides -- was used at that time under edict, it seems as if a device capable of identifying location, Julian date, and approximate time of day would have been much prized by them. Although there was no mention of other associated artifacts, perhaps if used in conjunction with a crude iron bar compass for alignment and placed on a flat level surface (on a clear day), the device could be accurately oriented to magnetic north. Rotating and turning the device through a trial and error process could potentially yield sufficient information to possibly assist in position location and time information. The round balls located a the apex of the pentagons are curious as well. They seem to be quite exotic in appearance for the simple purpose of legs. Perhaps knowledge gained from the cast shadow of the round legs at the perimeter could have been useful to the observer as well.

These were compasses/sundials. They've been found in graves and stashes, not passed down through generations of farmers. Farming has relied on calendars mostly for thousands of years. Travelers, soldiers, merchants, and explorers are more likely to use these. They've been found where they were taken to be used, where someone needed to know the time of day, latitude, and cardinal directions. Yes, these can be used easily to calculate the equinoxes. However, that is only one of many uses for these wonderful and ingenious objects. As for wood working, some have been found larger than baseballs, and some smaller than golf balls, all with different sized holes. Making/crafting or inspection of wood products, such as arrows and the like, would not be a use for these. There are tools that were in use that preformed those functions. And as far as wear, the wear would occur from travels. In a sack, hanging on a leather cord, or in a pocket of a traveler would wear them far more with every step than using them. Movement of cloth, rubbing from swinging back and forth, and sweat from the owner would wear them far more than setting them down and measuring their shadows over a period of time. But this is only my theory. May the conversation lead us to great discoveries together.

I appreciate the great lengths researchers have submitted to support various theories unraveling the mystery of the dodecahdron. I propose an alternate function, with no supporting data whatsoever. The function of the roman device was to assist in calculating payment of Roman troops. Has anyone compared Roman coin to a device ?

Could this be a tool to making arrows? Much like a pencil sharpener.

The dodecahedrons that have been found are in different sizes, which makes me think they may have been a tool used to pattern a wooden shaft ( possibly an arrow ) for consistent diameter size.

Could these have been used as a game of skill? Starting with largest hole on top players take turns trying to pitch a coin into hole. Game gets harder with the smaller holes. Could explain why this was found with hoard of coins. Wax could have been found inside one if candles were used to light the target. Military may have had them to relax after a day of pilaging.

Well done. I appreciate the comprehensive research complete with your calculations.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation of your theory. The wear marks were very very interesting.

Number of the beast
het boek van DA Ritchie heet we the scythians the lie of the land of egypt heft een plausibele verklaring voor de leeuw bij de pyramide en de dodeca is de ultieme geometrische vorm in ons universum.
